Check a Manual Recliner Handle Before You Order

Try a manual recliner’s actual handle from the position in which you will use the chair before ordering. Being able to touch a lever is different from completing the prescribed opening and closing sequence comfortably. Confirm the handle side and mechanism on the exact configuration being sold.

Identify the control before comparing chairs

Manual reclining does not describe one universal control. A chair may use an external lever, a recessed pull control or another manufacturer-defined arrangement. Ask the seller to identify the operating instructions for the demonstration model and show the normal sequence before you try it.

Record the model and control type together. A photograph of the chair’s front may hide the operating side, while a family product photograph may show a different option. Do not assume that a powered version and a manual version use interchangeable side controls.

The La-Z-Boy US FAQ says many of its recliners can be special ordered with a left-side handle instead of the standard right-side arrangement. The important word is many: confirm the option for the exact style. This is not permission to move the handle yourself after delivery.

Let the intended user assess the complete movement

Ask for an authorized showroom demonstration with the chair assembled and positioned according to its instructions. The intended user should sit in their ordinary supported position. Have the salesperson explain how the control is gripped, what movement it makes and how the chair returns to its closed position.

Observe the whole sequence rather than judging the first touch. Can the person locate the control, use it as demonstrated and complete the return without an awkward reach? A chair that opens readily but is difficult for that person to close has not passed their practical use check.

Do not keep repeating a movement that feels uncomfortable or requires forcing the control. Ask the salesperson to stop and explain whether a different configuration is available. This is a purchase assessment, not an exercise or a method for changing the mechanism’s resistance.

Separate reach, control motion and room access

A showroom often leaves more open space around a chair than a living room will. Sketch the chair beside the intended side table and mark which side carries the control. Include the table’s top projection, not just the distance between its legs and the recliner base.

The manufacturer’s movement clearances still apply. Beyond those, consider the demonstrated hand and forearm path. A control can remain visible while a projecting tabletop makes it inconvenient to use. You do not need a universal extra-inch rule; you need the actual chair’s instructions and a workable arrangement for its user.

A reversible room layout may solve that obstruction. If it cannot, ask about a factory-supported control-side option or another chair. Do not plan to solve it with an unapproved extension attached to the lever.

A comparison example with a clear outcome

Imagine a buyer tries two manual recliners. On Chair A, they can operate the control and complete the normal closing sequence comfortably. On Chair B, they can touch the handle but must change their seating position awkwardly to perform the prescribed movement. These are personal observations about the tried models, not a ranking of all lever designs.

At home, the intended side table occupies the operating side of A. The buyer marks that conflict on the room sketch and asks whether A has a confirmed factory left-handle option. Until the seller identifies the available configuration, the purchase remains unresolved. An option offered elsewhere in the brand’s range does not close the question.

If the seller can supply the required option, the buyer asks how to assess that configuration and records it on the order. If it cannot, the buyer can revise the furniture arrangement or continue comparing chairs. Neither outcome requires modifying the mechanism.

Do not infer personal suitability from a size label

Small, oversized and tall describe broad selling categories. They do not establish the relationship between your seated position and a particular control. Overall chair width can also hide substantial differences in arm shape and the control’s position relative to the seat.

If buying for another person, let that person participate in the assessment where possible. One household member’s easy reach is not evidence of another’s. Avoid promising that a manual or powered control will resolve a medical or mobility need on the basis of a furniture description.

Close the order with exact configuration details

Keep the model, control side and demonstrated operating instructions with the order confirmation. On delivery, compare the supplied configuration before accepting an unexplained difference as normal. If operation differs from the demonstration, contact the seller rather than adjusting concealed hardware.

A useful purchase record says who tried the chair, which configuration they used and whether the complete ordinary sequence worked for them. That is more informative than a generic statement that the handle is easy to reach.
